Dr. Cally Terwase Ikpe is an undisputed broadcast journalist and an icon in Nigeria’s entertainment, renowned for his visionary influence on music, media, and youth advocacy. As a veteran broadcaster, culture activist, event manager, and a thought leader in nonviolence advocacy, Dr. Ikpe has spent more than three decades shaping and elevating the Nigerian music scene. His contributions extend beyond entertainment, serving as a platform for societal change, mentoring, and empowerment of youth across the country.

Hailing from Benue State, Dr. Ikpe’s educational journey is as impressive as his professional accomplishments. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in English Language from Lagos State University, a Postgraduate Diploma in Mass Communication from the University of Lagos, and an MSc in Media and Communication from the prestigious School of Media and Communication at Pan-Atlantic University, Lagos. Most recently, Dr. Ikpe defended his Ph.D. thesis titled Media Reportage & the Politics of Violence in Benue & Zamfara States, Nigeria, a groundbreaking study that emphasizes his commitment to understanding and reshaping societal narratives through media.

Dr. Ikpe’s journey into media stardom began in 1995 when he launched Live Beats on NTA, Channel 5, one of the earliest and most influential music video shows in Nigeria. At a time when the country’s music industry was still emerging, Live Beats provided an essential platform for up-and-coming artists to display their talent. The program revolutionized how music was consumed and appreciated, and many of today’s global superstars, including 2Baba (formerly 2Face Idibia), Wizkid, Burna Boy, and Davido, owe part of their rise to the exposure they gained through Dr. Ikpe’s pioneering platform. In many ways, Live Beats served as the YouTube of its era, providing much-needed visibility and validation for artists aspiring to greatness.

Recognizing the need to celebrate excellence in music video production, Dr. Ikpe took a step further in 2007 by founding and coordinating Nigeria’s first-ever music video awards—the Nigeria Music Video Awards (NMVA). The NMVA quickly became a prestigious event in the entertainment calendar, showcasing creativity, rewarding talent, and promoting innovation in the industry. Under Dr. Ikpe’s mentorship, the awards have celebrated both established acts and emerging talents, further nurturing the growth of the Nigerian music industry and encouraging a culture of excellence.

Dr. Ikpe’s contributions, however, extend far beyond entertainment. He is the founder of the Youth Culture and Human Dignity Initiative (YOCHDI), an NGO focused on promoting nonviolence among Nigerian youth. Through the Violence-Free World Initiative, he has spearheaded advocacy campaigns designed to foster peace, reduce youth involvement in violence, and instill a culture of dignity and responsibility. This aspect of his work highlights Dr. Ikpe’s broader vision of using his platform not just for entertainment but for societal betterment, with a particular focus on the empowerment of the youth.

A tireless mentor and advocate, Dr. Ikpe continues to be a guiding light for younger generations of Nigerian artists. His role as a mentor is invaluable to rising stars, and many others. His dedication to nurturing talent and providing guidance has earned him widespread respect across Africa and beyond, sealing his status as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s entertainment industry.

Currently residing in Abuja with his family, Dr. Cally Ikpe remains actively involved in the media and entertainment sectors. He continues to contribute his vast experience, leading the charge for positive change in both the industry and wider society. His work as a broadcaster, advocate for nonviolence, and industry mentor is corroboration to his enduring commitment to Nigeria’s creative and cultural exposure.

Dr. Ikpe’s legacy is undeniable. His sacrifices and contributions, made at a time when Nigeria’s music industry was still finding its footing, laid the groundwork for the flourishing scene we see today. His innovation, education, and dedication have earned him a place as one of the country’s most respected entertainment veterans. As the industry continues to evolve, the new generation of artists and entertainers must remember the groundwork laid by icons like Dr. Cally Ikpe, whose remarkable achievements have been instrumental in Nigeria’s global cultural ascent.

Nigeria is indeed blessed with visionary veterans like Dr. Ikpe, who not only contributed to building the industry but continues to guide it with wisdom and grace. As we celebrate the successes of today’s artists, we must not forget the contributions of those who made it all possible. Dr. Cally Ikpe’s influence and legacy are a light of hope, and his enduring impact on Nigeria’s entertainment industry will be remembered for generations to come. Music has a way of bringing people together, and some connections formed through it stand the test of time. One such bond is the one I share with Oluwajuwonlo Iledare, popularly known as Jaywon. A few years ago, I received a call from him: "Boss, I'm in Abuja. Please send your address, I want to come and see you, sir." Within minutes, he arrived at my residence in Wuse 2, Abuja, accompanied by his manager and some crew members. Jaywon has always been a humble young man, and seeing him again reminded me of the passion and determination he has carried throughout his career. Jaywon’s journey into music began in the early 2000s when he was just another young man with dreams of making it big in the Nigerian music industry. I vividly remember his first performances in 2004 at my musical show, where I featured the likes of Daniel Wilson, W4, Righteous Man, Rocksteady, and Rymzo, among many other talented artists of that era. It was clear from the beginning that he had something ...
