The Nigeria Customs Service exemplifies efficiency and effectiveness, fully committed to its mission, especially in generating substantial revenue for the federal government. Recognizing the crucial need for strong leadership in this vital institution, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed Alhaji Bashir Adewale Adeniyi (MFR) as the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service. Alhaji Adeniyi, a man of exceptional intellect and sound education, was honored with the national distinction of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) by former President Muhammadu Buhari on October 11, 2022.
In his strategic efforts to enhance the Customs Service's efficiency, Comptroller General Adeniyi assigned the Kebbi Area Command to Command, Comptroller Iheanacho Ernest Ojike. A senior officer renowned for his integrity and dedication, Comptroller Ojike has swiftly proven to be an exemplary choice, delivering outstanding results since his appointment.
Under Comptroller Ojike’s leadership, the Kebbi Area Command has achieved significant milestones in a remarkably short period. At his inaugural press conference at the Command’s headquarters in Birnin Kebbi, Comptroller Ojike highlighted the impressive successes recorded within months. His leadership has been instrumental in intensifying anti-smuggling operations and boosting revenue generation for the federal government.
In the fight against smuggling, the Kebbi Command has conducted rigorous patrols and utilized intelligence to effectively curb smuggling activities across Kebbi State. The Command has also actively engaged local communities, educating them about the adverse impacts of smuggling on the economy, citizen well-being, and national security. Noteworthy seizures include 212 bags of foreign parboiled rice, 200 bales of used clothing, 10,025 liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), and various other contraband items, with a combined Duty Paid Value (DPV) of ₦126,278,959.60.
Despite the challenges posed by border closures with the Benin Republic and Niger Republic, revenue generation has seen a significant increase. With the recent reopening of the Kamba border, the Command generated ₦7,215,500 in a few months, marking a remarkable 125% increase compared to the previous period. This revenue is derived from the auction sales of seized PMS, auctioned vehicles, and Customs agent’s license renewal fees. The reopening of the border is expected to further enhance revenue generation.
Comptroller Ojike has been proactive in facilitating legitimate trade, engaging stakeholders, traditional rulers, and local communities to promote lawful commerce and prevent smuggling. Collaborations with sister agencies have been crucial in improving security and intelligence, ensuring the controlled exportation of restricted items like grains to prevent a domestic food crisis.
The decision to reopen the Kamba border post, following directives from Comptroller General Adeniyi, marks a significant step in promoting international trade between Nigeria and its neighbors, Niger and Benin Republics. This initiative aims to facilitate legitimate trade and contribute positively to nation-building while ensuring that prohibited items do not enter the country.
Under the leadership of Comptroller General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi and dedicated officers like Comptroller Iheanacho Ernest Ojike, the Nigeria Customs Service has achieved notable success in revenue generation. The agency reported a revenue increase to ₦4.49 trillion over the past year, a 74 percent rise from the previous period. This remarkable achievement underscores the dedication and commitment of Customs officers to serving Nigeria and enhancing the country's economic stability.
Command, Comptroller Iheanacho Ernest Ojike has demonstrated exceptional leadership and dedication in his role at the Kebbi Area Command. His achievements in anti-smuggling operations, revenue generation, and trade facilitation reflect the strategic vision of Comptroller General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi in selecting the right officer for the job. These collective efforts signify a promising future for the Nigeria Customs Service and the nation's economic growth.

Music has a way of bringing people together, and some connections formed through it stand the test of time. One such bond is the one I share with Oluwajuwonlo Iledare, popularly known as Jaywon. A few years ago, I received a call from him: "Boss, I'm in Abuja. Please send your address, I want to come and see you, sir." Within minutes, he arrived at my residence in Wuse 2, Abuja, accompanied by his manager and some crew members. Jaywon has always been a humble young man, and seeing him again reminded me of the passion and determination he has carried throughout his career. Jaywon’s journey into music began in the early 2000s when he was just another young man with dreams of making it big in the Nigerian music industry. I vividly remember his first performances in 2004 at my musical show, where I featured the likes of Daniel Wilson, W4, Righteous Man, Rocksteady, and Rymzo, among many other talented artists of that era. It was clear from the beginning that he had something ...
