Kashim Shettima: A Comprehensive Review of Nigeria’s 15th Vice President

Kashim Shettima, born on September 2, 1966, in Maiduguri, Borno State, is a prominent Nigerian politician and the current Vice President of Nigeria. His journey from academia to banking, and eventually to high-ranking political offices, illustrates his versatility and dedication to public service.

Kashim Shettima was born into the family of Shettima Mustafa Kuttayibe. He began his education at Lamisula Primary School in Maiduguri and continued at Government Community Secondary School in Biu. Later, he transferred to Government Science Secondary School in Potiskum, where he completed his secondary education in 1983. Shettima then attended the University of Maiduguri, where he earned a BSc in Agricultural Economics in 1989. His academic pursuits did not stop there; he completed his NYSC at the Nigerian Agricultural Cooperative Bank in Calabar and obtained an MSc in Agricultural Economics from the University of Ibadan in 1991.

Shettima’s professional career began in academia as a lecturer in the Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Maiduguri from 1991 to 1993. He then transitioned into the banking sector, starting with the Commercial Bank of Africa in Lagos as head of the accounts unit from 1993 to 1997. His banking career progressed steadily as he moved to African International Bank Limited, where he served as Deputy Manager and then Manager. In 2001, he joined Zenith Bank as the head of its Maiduguri branch and rose to the position of General Manager by 2007.

Kashim Shettima's political career commenced in 2007 when he was appointed Commissioner for Finance in Borno State by Governor Ali Modu Sheriff. Over the next four years, he held several key positions in the state cabinet, including Commissioner of Local Governments and Chieftaincy Affairs, Education, Agriculture, and Health. His experience in these various roles prepared him for higher responsibilities.

In the 2011 elections, Shettima was elected as the Governor of Borno State under the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP). His tenure as governor was notably challenging due to the Boko Haram insurgency, but he was re-elected in 2015, demonstrating the trust and confidence the people of Borno had in his leadership.

After serving two terms as governor, Shettima was elected as the Senator for Borno Central in 2019. His tenure in the Senate further solidified his reputation as a dedicated public servant. Despite being renominated for the Senate in 2023, he withdrew to become the running mate of Bola Tinubu in the presidential election. Following their victory, Shettima was sworn in as Vice President of Nigeria on May 29, 2023.

Kashim Shettima is married to Nana Usman Alkali, and together they have three children. Known for his intimidating appearance, he has often been described as a gentleman full of kindness and zeal for leadership. His educational background and professional experiences have equipped him with a broad perspective and a deep understanding of Nigeria's socio-economic challenges.

Throughout his career, Shettima has been recognized for his leadership and contributions. He received several awards, including:

- Governor of the Year (Leadership, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Vanguard Newspapers, Tell Magazine) in multiple years.

- Zik Prize for Leadership in 2017.

- Courage and Exceptional Leadership Award by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Kaduna and FCT.

As Vice President, Shettima is expected to oversee Nigeria's economic planning team and provide crucial recommendations to the President. His extensive background in economics and finance, coupled with his political experience, positions him as a vital asset in addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges.

Kashim Shettima's journey from a scholar and banker to a significant political figure in Nigeria is a motivation. His resilience, dedication, and leadership qualities are fascinating. His story is one of continuous growth and adaptation, reflecting his commitment to serving his country with distinction. As he embarks on his role as Vice President, Nigerians anticipate that his experience and vision will contribute significantly to the nation's development and prosperity. Music has a way of bringing people together, and some connections formed through it stand the test of time. One such bond is the one I share with Oluwajuwonlo Iledare, popularly known as Jaywon. A few years ago, I received a call from him: "Boss, I'm in Abuja. Please send your address, I want to come and see you, sir." Within minutes, he arrived at my residence in Wuse 2, Abuja, accompanied by his manager and some crew members. Jaywon has always been a humble young man, and seeing him again reminded me of the passion and determination he has carried throughout his career. Jaywon’s journey into music began in the early 2000s when he was just another young man with dreams of making it big in the Nigerian music industry. I vividly remember his first performances in 2004 at my musical show, where I featured the likes of Daniel Wilson, W4, Righteous Man, Rocksteady, and Rymzo, among many other talented artists of that era. It was clear from the beginning that he had something ...
