Early Life and Education

Born on December 27, 1963, in Mavo, Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State, Ibrahim Kanje Bawa's educational journey began at Lea Primary School, Mavo (1971-1976). He continued his education at the Government Secondary School, Wase, and the School of Prelim Studies, Keffi (1976-1981). Bawa attended Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria (1981-1983), and then proceeded to the Nigerian Law School, Lagos (1983-1986). He furthered his studies at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (1986-1987) and completed his NYSC from 1987 to 1988.

Bawa started his legal career as a Junior Counsel at Choji & Co. (1988-1990) and then served as a Senior Instructor at the Development Centre in Jos (1990-1992). He later became a Partner at T.U. Lektu & Co. (1992-1993). His leadership skills were recognized when he was appointed Chairman of the NRC Caretaker Committee in Wase Local Government Area (November 1992-April 1993). During this period, he also served as the Legal Adviser for the Legislative Arms of the Local Government Area (1992-1993).

In 1993, Bawa joined the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as a Principal Legal Officer, marking the beginning of a notable 23-year tenure. His roles included serving on various committees and panels, such as investigating local government election results and participating in the drafting of transition to civil rule decrees and the Electoral Acts of 2001, 2002, and 2006. Bawa was appointed Acting Director of Legal Services at INEC Headquarters twice and became the Director of Legal Services on June 26, 2015. He resigned from INEC on April 1, 2016.

Bawa's private legal practice is marked by professionalism and dedication. Clients have consistently praised his attention to detail, professionalism, and clear guidance during challenging times. In 2023, Ibrahim Kanje Bawa entered the political arena by contesting for the Wase Federal Constituency seat under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Music has a way of bringing people together, and some connections formed through it stand the test of time. One such bond is the one I share with Oluwajuwonlo Iledare, popularly known as Jaywon. A few years ago, I received a call from him: "Boss, I'm in Abuja. Please send your address, I want to come and see you, sir." Within minutes, he arrived at my residence in Wuse 2, Abuja, accompanied by his manager and some crew members. Jaywon has always been a humble young man, and seeing him again reminded me of the passion and determination he has carried throughout his career. Jaywon’s journey into music began in the early 2000s when he was just another young man with dreams of making it big in the Nigerian music industry. I vividly remember his first performances in 2004 at my musical show, where I featured the likes of Daniel Wilson, W4, Righteous Man, Rocksteady, and Rymzo, among many other talented artists of that era. It was clear from the beginning that he had something ...
