In Nigeria, the demand for good governance is ever-present, as citizens seek a government that upholds these principles. This article delves into the current administration's efforts, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, in addressing Nigeria's complex governance issues and outlining potential strategies for improvement.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu: Building on Past Successes

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, inaugurated on May 29, 2023, has a robust track record as a former governor of Lagos State. His tenure from 1999 to 2007 was marked by significant reforms in the civil service, anti-corruption measures, and infrastructure development. Tinubu's approach to governance emphasized the importance of creating incentives for civil servants, improving working conditions, and eliminating financial mismanagement through measures like removing ghost workers from the payroll system.

In Lagos, Tinubu's administration focused on reducing endemic corruption by eliminating cash payments to the government and bringing back expatriates to improve critical sectors like healthcare and transportation. These measures were instrumental in transforming Lagos into a more efficient and transparent state. As President, Tinubu aims to replicate these successes on a national scale, addressing Nigeria's broader challenges with a similar reform-oriented mindset.

Vice President Kashim Shettima: Overcoming Security and Socio-Economic Challenges

Vice President Kashim Shettima, former governor of Borno State, has a unique perspective on governance, having led a state severely affected by the Boko Haram insurgency. During his tenure, Shettima's administration made significant strides in improving security in Maiduguri, the state capital, through the support of security agencies and the funding of youth vigilante groups like the Civilian-JTF. These efforts helped restore normalcy and nightlife in the city after years of curfew.

Shettima's administration also focused on job creation through initiatives like interlocking brick-making and street cleaning, which provided employment to hundreds of youths. Additionally, the management of internally displaced persons (IDPs) camps improved with the introduction of household feeding systems and support from organizations like the Dangote Foundation. Infrastructure projects, such as the completion of Lagos Street road and bridge, and the reconstruction of towns and villages destroyed by Boko Haram, further highlighted Shettima's commitment to rebuilding Borno State.

Road Maintenance Reintroducing toll gates on major highways can provide a sustainable source of revenue for road maintenance and improvement. This approach not only raises funds but also helps manage traffic and ensures that roads are adequately maintained.

Investing in Durable Infrastructure while asphalt roads are common in Nigeria, concrete roads offer greater durability and require less frequent maintenance. Investing in concrete road construction can result in long-term cost savings and improved infrastructure resilience.

Good governance in Nigeria requires a holistic approach that addresses the core principles of accountability, leadership, integrity, and stewardship. The current administration, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, has demonstrated a commitment to these principles through their past achievements and ongoing efforts.
