 The Unsung Heroes: The Nigerian Military's Unwavering Dedication

The Nigerian military stands as a victory to bravery, sacrifice, and unyielding commitment to the nation's security. From safeguarding our borders to undertaking international peacekeeping missions, the Nigerian military has consistently demonstrated its resolve to protect lives and uphold national integrity, often at great personal cost.

Growing up in a military cantonment with my late uncle, General F.O. Okonkwo, I witnessed firsthand the immense sacrifices made by military officers. These brave men and women are often absent from family milestones, missing their children's first birthdays, first days at school, and countless other cherished moments. Their dedication to duty means that many spend only 30 days a year with their families, sacrificing personal happiness for national security.

The history of the Nigerian Army (NA), the land branch of the Nigerian Armed Forces and the largest among them, dates back to 1863. Lt. Glover of the Royal Navy formed a local force known as the "Glover Hausas" with 18 indigenes from Northern Nigeria. Initially used for punitive expeditions and protecting British trade routes, this force evolved into the "Hausa Constabulary" in 1865, performing both police and military duties.

In 1901, the "Lagos Battalion" was incorporated into the West Africa Frontier Force (WAFF), merging with other units to form the Northern and Southern Nigerian Regiments. These regiments played vital roles in the annexation of Nigeria by Lord Lugard between 1901 and 1903.

The Nigerian Army's ongoing efforts in Operation SAFE HAVEN, particularly in the Fann District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, Plateau State, highlight their relentless pursuit of security. From July 10-16, 2024, a tactical team from the 3rd Division/Operation SAFE HAVEN conducted a follow-up operation after being attacked while attempting to recover arms from a gunrunner’s hideout. This operation resulted in the arrest of eight suspects and the recovery of a significant cache of arms, ammunition, and other dangerous weapons, including:

- Twelve AK-47 rifles and twelve fabricated AK-47 rifles

- Fifteen Dane guns

- Various magazines and rounds of ammunition

- Military uniforms and equipment

These recoveries underline the district's status as a criminal enclave and the military's determination to eradicate illegal arms within the Joint Operations Area.

During the operation, Assistant Superintendent of Immigration Christopher Luka Agwom was tragically killed. His dedication and sacrifice were honored, and his loss has left a profound impact on both his family and colleagues. His bravery exemplifies the spirit of the Nigerian military, whose members often pay the ultimate price in the line of duty.

The Nigerian military's efforts to maintain national security rely heavily on public collaboration. The success of operations like those in Fann District depends on credible information from citizens. As Major SN Zhakom, Military Information Officer of Operation SAFE HAVEN, stated, the division remains committed to mopping up illegal arms and ensuring the safety of law-abiding citizens.

The Nigerian military's history and ongoing achievements reflect their unwavering dedication to the nation. These brave men and women are the real heroes, often unseen and unsung, who leave their families behind to protect our land. Their sacrifices and victories are a source of national pride and a reminder of the price of freedom and security.
