Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, a seasoned Nigerian politician and lawyer, has made a name for himself in Nigerian politics. Born on December 13, 1967, in Obio-Akpor, Rivers State, Wike hails from the Ikwerre ethnic group. His educational journey laid a strong foundation for his future political career. Wike attended the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, where he earned a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree. He furthered his education with a Master of Arts degree in Political and Administrative Studies, equipping him with the knowledge and skills necessary for his political endeavors.


Wike's political career began at the grassroots level. He was elected as the Executive Chairman of Obio-Akpor Local Government Area, a position he held from 1999 to 2007. His tenure was marked by significant local development initiatives, which earned him recognition and set the stage for his rise in state and national politics.


In 2007, Wike was appointed as the Chief of Staff to the Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi. His effectiveness in this role led to his appointment as the Minister of State for Education in 2011 under President Goodluck Jonathan's administration. Wike's tenure saw him actively involved in various educational reforms and initiatives aimed at improving Nigeria's educational sector. In September 2013, he became the Acting Minister of Education, a role he held until April 2014.


Wike's most significant political achievement came when he was elected the Governor of Rivers State, serving from May 29, 2015, to May 29, 2023. His tenure as governor was transformative for the state. Wike embarked on numerous infrastructural projects, including the construction of major flyovers in Port Harcourt at Garrison, Rumoukoro, and Artillery. These projects not only improved traffic flow but also contributed to the state's economic development.


Wike also focused on educational reforms. In June 2019, he declared public primary and secondary education free, a move that was both praised and criticized. He also announced free registration for the annual Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination for participating locals, further emphasizing his commitment to education.


One of Wike's landmark achievements was the signing of a bill in 2022 that strengthened a woman's right to inherit property. This progressive move was a significant step towards gender equality in Rivers State, and it showcased Wike's willingness to champion social justice.


In March 2022, Wike declared his intention to run for the presidency of Nigeria under the People's Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2023 general elections. Although he was the first runner-up, losing to Atiku Abubakar in the PDP primaries, Wike's presidential bid highlighted his ambition and vision for Nigeria.


On August 16, 2023, President Bola Tinubu appointed Wike as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. This appointment followed a rigorous nomination, screening, and approval process by the Senate. As the Minister of FCT, Wike's responsibilities include overseeing the development and administration of Nigeria's capital, Abuja.


Wike's legacy as the Governor of Rivers State is marked by his transformative projects and commitment to social justice. His ability to deliver tangible results has earned him respect and admiration across political divides.
