Ezenwo Nyesom Wike: The Honorable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory

Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, a seasoned Nigerian politician and lawyer, has made a name for himself in Nigerian politics. His journey from local governance to the federal stage highlights his dedication, resilience, and capability in public service. As the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Wike's extensive experience and proven track record make him a formidable figure in Nigerian politics.

Born on December 13, 1967, in Obio-Akpor, Rivers State, Wike hails from the Ikwerre ethnic group. His educational journey laid a strong foundation for his future political career. Wike attended the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, where he earned a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree. He furthered his education with a Master of Arts degree in Political and Administrative Studies, equipping him with the knowledge and skills necessary for his political endeavors.

Wike's political career began at the grassroots level. He was elected as the Executive Chairman of Obio-Akpor Local Government Area, a position he held from 1999 to 2007. His tenure was marked by significant local development initiatives, which earned him recognition and set the stage for his rise in state and national politics.

In 2007, Wike was appointed as the Chief of Staff to the Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi. His effectiveness in this role led to his appointment as the Minister of State for Education in 2011 under President Goodluck Jonathan's administration. Wike's tenure saw him actively involved in various educational reforms and initiatives aimed at improving Nigeria's educational sector. In September 2013, he became the Acting Minister of Education, a role he held until April 2014.

Wike's most significant political achievement came when he was elected the Governor of Rivers State, serving from May 29, 2015, to May 29, 2023. His tenure as governor was transformative for the state. Wike embarked on numerous infrastructural projects, including the construction of major flyovers in Port Harcourt at Garrison, Rumoukoro, and Artillery. These projects not only improved traffic flow but also contributed to the state's economic development.

Wike also focused on educational reforms. In June 2019, he declared public primary and secondary education free, a move that was both praised and criticized. He also announced free registration for the annual Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination for participating locals, further emphasizing his commitment to education.

One of Wike's landmark achievements was the signing of a bill in 2022 that strengthened a woman's right to inherit property. This progressive move was a significant step towards gender equality in Rivers State, and it showcased Wike's willingness to champion social justice.

In March 2022, Wike declared his intention to run for the presidency of Nigeria under the People's Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2023 general elections. Although he was the first runner-up, losing to Atiku Abubakar in the PDP primaries, Wike's presidential bid highlighted his ambition and vision for Nigeria.

On August 16, 2023, President Bola Tinubu appointed Wike as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. This appointment followed a rigorous nomination, screening, and approval process by the Senate. As the Minister of FCT, Wike's responsibilities include overseeing the development and administration of Nigeria's capital, Abuja.

Wike's legacy as the Governor of Rivers State is marked by his transformative projects and commitment to social justice. His ability to deliver tangible results has earned him respect and admiration across political divides. President Bola Tinubu's decision to appoint him as the Minister of FCT underscores Wike's capability and the trust placed in him to manage one of Nigeria's most important regions.

Despite his controversial nature, Wike has proven to be a diligent and effective leader. His influence extends beyond Rivers State, as he remains an active member of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) His political acumen and ability to navigate complex political decisions make him a significant figure in Nigerian politics.

Wike is married to Eberechi Wike, and together they have three children. His family has been a source of support throughout his political journey, providing him with the stability needed to navigate the demanding nature of public service.

Ezenwo Nyesom Wike's journey from local governance to the federal stage is an example of his dedication, resilience, and ability to deliver results. As the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Wike's extensive experience and proven track record positions him to make significant contributions to Nigeria's development. His legacy as a transformative leader continues to inspire and influence this generation of Nigerian politicians. Written by Daniel Okonkwo for Profile International Human Rights Advocate

Music has a way of bringing people together, and some connections formed through it stand the test of time. One such bond is the one I share with Oluwajuwonlo Iledare, popularly known as Jaywon. A few years ago, I received a call from him: "Boss, I'm in Abuja. Please send your address, I want to come and see you, sir." Within minutes, he arrived at my residence in Wuse 2, Abuja, accompanied by his manager and some crew members. Jaywon has always been a humble young man, and seeing him again reminded me of the passion and determination he has carried throughout his career. Jaywon’s journey into music began in the early 2000s when he was just another young man with dreams of making it big in the Nigerian music industry. I vividly remember his first performances in 2004 at my musical show, where I featured the likes of Daniel Wilson, W4, Righteous Man, Rocksteady, and Rymzo, among many other talented artists of that era. It was clear from the beginning that he had something ...
