Anambra State’s Bold Step Towards Restoring Peace and Security

Anambra State, often referred to as the “Light of the Nation,” stands as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s southeastern region. Established on August 27, 1991, the state is celebrated for its rich history, vibrant culture, and strategic location, which has glued its role as a hub for commerce, industry, and cultural excellence. It shares borders with Delta State to the west, Imo and Rivers States to the south, Enugu State to the east, and Kogi State to the north.

The state capital, Awka, alongside Onitsha—one of Africa’s largest and most dynamic cities—has long been at the forefront of economic activity. Nnewi, the second-largest city, is globally recognized as an industrial powerhouse and a vital hub for automotive manufacturing. Despite these accolades, Anambra State has faced persistent security challenges that have dampened its growth and tarnished its reputation.

Anambra has produced some of Nigeria’s most illustrious figures, including former Vice President Alex Ekwueme, literary icon Chinua Achebe, diplomat Emeka Anyaoku, and renowned lawyer Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor. It is also home to numerous Igbo billionaires who have made significant contributions to Nigeria’s economic perspective. Unfortunately, the deteriorating security situation has compelled many of these entrepreneurs to relocate their businesses, depriving the state of essential investments and economic opportunities.

Compounding these challenges is the adverse impact of the Monday sit-at-home directive, which has stifled economic activities and disrupted the daily lives of residents. Recognizing the urgent need to address these issues, Governor Chukwuma Soludo has launched a bold and innovative initiative to restore peace and security in the state.

In response to escalating insecurity, Governor Soludo unveiled Operation Udo Ga-Achi (Operation Peace Shall Reign), a comprehensive security initiative grounded in the newly enacted Anambra State Homeland Security Law 2025. This initiative is designed to encourage a safer environment for residents, businesses, and investors, signaling a new era of stability and growth.

The inauguration ceremony, held at the prestigious International Convention Centre in Awka, was graced by high-profile dignitaries, including members of the Anambra State Executive Council, senators, governors, local government leaders, traditional rulers, and representatives of the diplomatic community.

Operation Udo Ga-Achi is a collaborative effort involving multiple security agencies, including the Nigerian Army, Police, Navy, Department of State Services (DSS), Civil Defence, Special Forces, and Agunechemba, the state’s structured security outfit. These agencies are equipped with cutting-edge tools and technology to ensure effective operations. Key components include:

AI-powered surveillance cameras for comprehensive community monitoring.

An integrated command-and-control system combining voice, video, and data for efficient security management.

Advanced communication devices such as walkie-talkies for seamless coordination.

The initiative also features specialized task forces targeting critical areas such as:

To dismantle criminal networks, the operation employs proactive strategies, including patrols, stop-and-search operations, and intelligence-driven approaches.

To improve responsiveness and accessibility, the initiative incorporates a State Call Centre equipped with toll-free lines: 5111, 08002200008, and 112 (the national emergency number managed by the Nigerian Communications Commission).

Governor Soludo emphasized that security, law, and order are fundamental to realizing his administration’s vision of a livable and prosperous homeland. Acknowledging the complex and evolving nature of crime in the Southeast, he outlined a dual strategy focused on proactive prevention and robust enforcement.

This bold step represents a transformative approach to governance and security in Anambra State. By addressing the root causes of insecurity and stimulating collaboration among stakeholders, the initiative lays the groundwork for a brighter, more prosperous future.
